90 years have passed since on 12 March 1928 the great Russian actress passed irrevocably beyond the veil to join the eternity. The third evening of «The Ermolova’s Readings» will take place this Friday at the House Museum of M.N. Ermolova.

There is good reason behind the theme of the evening «M.N. Ermolova and A.N. Ostrovsky»…The actress loved and played Ostrovsky a lot. Negina in «Talents and Admirers», Katerina in «The Storm», Larisa in «Without a Dowry», Kruchinina in «Guilty Without Guilt» - this is not a complete list of the many сharacters created by Ermolova.

On March 16 at 18:00 each guest of the Ermolova’s House Museum will have an opportunity to hear the monologues of famous Ostrovsky’s heroines presented by the brilliant actresses of the Maly Theatre - People's Artist of Russia Lyudmila Titova, People's Artist of Russia Svetlana Amanova, Honored Artist of Russia Tatiyana Lebedeva, Lidiya Milyuzina, Polina Dolinskaya, Mary Mark.

The evening will be hosted by Honoured Cultural Worker, Head of the House Museum of M.N. Ermolova, Raisa Ostrovskaya.

Congratulations to People's Artist of Russia Yuri Ivanovich Kayurov who has been awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland of the II degree, for “his great contribution to the development of Russian culture and art, the media and many years of fruitful activity”. The decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 2, 2018. We wish Yuri Ivanovich all the best!

On the last day of winter, February 28, a long-awaited evening dedicated to the memory of the remarkable Russian artist Evgeniy Yakovlevich Vesnik, was held on the Maly Theatre’s small stage. The Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre, People's Artist of the USSR Yuri Solomin delivered an opening speech and was later followed by People's artists of Russia Vladimir Beylis, Vasiliy Bochkaryov, Alexander Korshunov, Honored Artist of Russia Zinaida Andreeva and actress of the Maly Theatre Klavdiya Moiseeva, who shared their memories with the audience.

1. How long does it take for an actor to learn the role and master it?

You can learn the role quickly. But to master one it requires lifetime. First you collect information - get all your notes and materials together - everything connected with the play, the author, the epoque. Sometimes this «material» finds you out of nowhere. A book, an article you might come across in a library or a bookstore that turns out to be useful. The material gradually invades you, you become addicted to it, you can only talk about it, you fall asleep and get up thinking about it. You start torturing your family and friends. It’s a good thing when one production brings together all the actors, who are involved in it, and when they do not get tired of each other. Today this is crucial. Rehearsal after rehearsal and before you know it, it's opening night! The child is born. It takes a long time for it to grow up, live its own life, break loose and fly away.

2. How long does it take you to change your make-up and costumes?

That depends on the skills of the make-up artists and dressers.

3. Director’s involvement in actor’s work and in the production process.

The director has to compose the production, tell the story and find a place for each character, determine the degree of significance of each, place the accents. To turn this story into a wonderful performance. The director shares his plans with the artist. The director has a certain concept. And then the actor with his own personality and talent embodies this idea. And together they bring this story to life: the actor fills it with his emotions, his understanding and experience. The director has to be acute and convincing. He has to be more insightful than the artist. Then the artist would be willing to obey him.

4. Your attitude towards theatre critics.
I do not read them. Critics do not write for the actors. Everything that has to do with my acting, I know that myself. What was good, and what went wrong.

5. About the audience.
The audience has changed a lot. When I came to Maly, they used to say that it is more difficult to make a person laugh than to make him cry. Now they laugh where they have to and where they do not have to. They only thing that they want to do is laugh. And they usually ask the tickets for «something light and funny». Therefore, when we were putting on «Vassa Zheleznova. The First Version», we were afraid that the audience will not appreciate such a strong material. But we were wrong. In the auditorium the audience keeps silent, the spectators are totally immersed in the drama, and this is the moment, when you realize that nothing is lost. They say that they want to laugh in the theatre, because «life is cruel and hard anyways». But I think that emotions that you experience in the theatre, such as compassion or empathy, empathy, are purifying. It’s a confession. I love our spectators - smart, subtle and understanding. Because without them we are not needed anyways.

As the read-through of Molière's «Tartuffe» took place on February 6th, the Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre Yuri Solomin traditionally attended the first reading of the play and wished the production team best of luck.

The production team consists of director Vladimir Dragunov, designer Stanislav Benediktov and composer Gregory Gobernik.

Cast: Viktor Nizovoy (Orgon), Tatyana Lebedeva (Madame Pernelle), Irina Leonova (Elmire), Maksim Khrustalyov (Damis), Dariya Novoseltseva (Mariane), Vasiliy Zotov (Cléante), Inna Ivanova (Dorine), Alexander Naumov (Valère), Stanislav Soshnikov (Monsieur Loyal) and Andrey Sergeev (Officer). The Maly Theatre’s young artists,Irina Zheryakova and Stanislav Soshnikov (a magnificent duet from «Vassa Zheleznova. The First Version», have recently taken part in a radio talk show «Dramatis Personae». The hosts of the program Vladislav Boretsky and Oksana Podriga presented their guests the following way: «The Maly Theatre is one of the oldest traditional theatres in Moscow. However, apart from venerable, renowned actors, «veterans» of the stage», the theatre’s company has a brilliant assemblage of young artists to boast of. We decided to meet with the young representatives of the Maly Theatre’s company and talk with them about living in the art. Moreover, the guests of tonight’s program star in M. Gorky’s «Vassa», whose anniversary is celebrated all over the world this year.»

On February 1, the Maly Theatre's inimitable actress, People's Artist of the USSR, our precious Elina Avraamovna Bystritskaya celebrates 60 years of service on the theatre's stage. We wish her continued good health and we are happy to have her with us!

On February 19 Yuri Solomin together with the Maly Theatre’s artists Irina Muravyova, Aleksey Faddeev and Inna Ivanova will visit Leo Tolstoy State Museum. The house of the great writer will host a special evening dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the first production of Leo Tolstoy's play «The Power of Darkness» and the 10th anniversary of the play staged at the Maly Theatre.

Tolstoy’s play has quite an interesting stage story. After all, its premieres were not held in Russia, but abroad - in Paris and Berlin. At home the premiere had been postponed for censorhip reasons, and for the first time the play was staged in St. Petersburg.

In the Maly Theatre, the «The Power of Darkness» was staged three times, for the first time - in 1895, as a benefit performance of Nadezhda Nikulina, who played Anisya. In 1956 Boris Ravensky directed the legendary performance. Back then the scenography of Boris Volkov was compared to the paintings of Venetsianov.

10 years ago, in 2007, Yuri Solomin decided to revive «The Power of Darkness» on the Maly Theatre’s stage. On the occasion of the jubilee of the production, the Museum of Leo Tolstoy invited Yuri Solomin and leading actresses and actor of the play to the meeting: Irina Muravyova, Inna Ivanova and Aleksey Faddeev.

The evening will be held February 19 at 17:00 in Leo Tolstoy State Museum.
