On March 26 a special evening dedicated to Honored artist of Russia Viktor Nizovoy was held at Yablochkina Central Actor's House. The evening was a sell-out. No empty seats. The evening featured People's Artist of the USSR Yuri Solomin and was hosted by People's Artist of Russia Vladimir Dubrovsky. Below you may find a video recording of the event.

The premiere of the play based on Alexander Pushkin's short story "The Blizzard" was held at the Maly Theatre on April 9 as part of the Easter fundraising event with the support of the Russian Orthodox Church and the "Present" foundation. The play was staged by Aleksey Dubrovskiy and is accompanied by Georgy Sviridov's music performed by the Maly Theatre’s Orchestra.

The script for the playing was prepared by Archimandrite Simeon (Tomachinsky), rector of the Kursk Theological Seminary and confessor of the "Present" Foundation. At a press conference held before the performance, he emphasized the importance of building formally, systematically, and sequentially a sense of art and classical culture with young people.
- Many Christian values become clearer through the cultural prism of classical works, given in living images. The Blizzard is a poem about Divine Providence. The Providence is not a mere fate or a happy coincidence. It involves a person’s participation as well. Without a real person, his choices and his actions, it is hardly possible to realize God's plans.

Vladimir Legoyda, chairman of the Synodal Department for Church-Societyand Mass Media Relations stressed the need for traditional reading of the classics.
- Of course, any production is always within the scope of director’s interpretation. But sometimes, when you see the play you don’t understand, why they decided to keep the name of the original literary work. Why would they write: "based on" or “inspired by”? Just honestly say: "I was inspired by the work of the great author, so I rendered what I rendered." It is a shame to violate the classics. It is a great pleasure that the play was staged at the Maly Theatre, said Vladimir Legoyda.

April 12 marks 195 years since the birth of the great Russian playwright Alexander Ostrovsky, a man whose role in the history of the Maly Theatre can not be overestimated. The Maly Theatre has been long known as the House of Ostrovsky. All his plays were staged in our theatre, many of them he wrote specifically for the actors of the Maly Theatre.

This year the Maly Theatre celebrates the playwright's anniversary with the XII International Theatre Festival Ostrovsky in the Ostrovsky House. It will be held from May 11 to May 17 on the main stage.

And today we invite you to plunge into in the world of Alexander Nikolayevich's plays and watch the recordings of several performances: "Truth is Good, But Happiness Is Better" (Boris Nikolsky's production of 1951, starring Varvara Ryzhova and Evdokiya Turchaninova), "The Storm" (staged by Boris Babochkin, 1977, starring Olga Khorkova and Lyudmila Shcherbinina) and "Wolves and Sheep" (staged by Vitaly Ivanov in 1999, starring Lyudmila Polyakova, Victor Bortsov, Viktor and Alexander Korshunov, Tatyana Pankova, Nikolay Vereshchenko, Anatoly Toropov and Irina Muravyova ).

On March 16, guests of the Ermolova’s House Museum will have an opportunity to hear the monologues of famous Ostrovsky’s heroines presented by the brilliant actresses of the Maly Theatre - People's Artist of Russia Lyudmila Titova, People's Artist of Russia Svetlana Amanova,Honored Artist of Russia Tatyana Lebedeva, Olga Pleshkova, Polina Dolinskaya, Mari Mark.The evening was hosted by the Honored cultural worker, head of the House-museum of M.N. As you might remember, two significant events in our theatre's life took place on March 30 and both of them are associated with the Moscow metro. First, the launch of a themed Maly Theatre's train operating on the Zamoskvoretskaya line, and second, the opening of the exhibition called "Captains of the Maly Theatre" on "Vystavochnaya" metro station. On April 4 the legendary Russian actress, People's Artist of the USSR Elina Avraamovna Bystritskaya is celebrating her anniversary. Elina Avraamovna is best known for her role of Axinia in Sergei Gerasimov's epic screening of Mikhail Sholokhov's novel And Quiet Flows the Don. She is not only an incredibly beautiful woman, but she is also a talented actress, a true movie and theatre star.

On behalf of the Maly Theatre’s staff we would like to express our cordial congratulations on her birthday anniversary and to wish that Elina Avraamovna continues with the same unfailing energy and human warmth that are so greatly admired by her fellow colleagues and numerous spectators.

The media prepared several special broadcasts, dedicated to the anniversary of the actress (do not miss them on April 4, 12:00 am, repeated on April 8, 12:45, «Russia K» channel, «Life Line» program; «Star of the Epoch» on Channel One on April 7 at 14:10).

«I worked with many great directors and was happy because they all acknowledged me as an artist», says the actress, «and when the director feels the actor, sees and respects him, great results are on the way». Elina Bystritskaya will share her memories about her difficult childhood, the years of study and work in the Maly Theatre, the films in which she starred, and will share her memories of interesting events that happened to her in life and about the outstanding people she met.

An evening dedicated to the memory of the remarkable Russian artist Evgeniy Yakovlevich Vesnik took place on February 28 at the Maly Theatre. Today we would like to share with you a video recording of this event.

By decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the Maly Theatre's director, People's Artist of Russia, Vladimir Mikhailovich Beylis, was awarded the Order of Honor. The document was signed by Vladimir Putin on March 26, 2018. Congratulations to Vladimir Mikhailovich on the deserved award! We wish you more awards, more inspiration and greater achievements!

A new themed train, dedicated to the history of the Maly Theatre, has been launched on the Zamoskvoretskaya line of the Moscow Metro on March 28.

The carriages are decorated with archival photos of performances of different years, staged at the Maly Theatre. Among them are images from the productions, based on the plays by Alexander Ostrovsky, Anton Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy. On the inside of each of the seven carriages there are quotations of heroes of literary classics. A separate car is dedicated to the activities of the Maly Theatre during the Great Patriotic War.

The solemn event was attended by representatives of the Department for Transport and Road Infrastructure Development of the Moscow City Government , the Maly Theatre, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation and the Moscow metro.

«This train, which will be seen by almost 2 million people over six months period, is regarded as a guide to the history of the Maly Theatre and the development of the theatre in Russia at large. For transport workers, it is a great pleasure to know that now Moscow transport serves as a medium of instruction,» said Deputy Mayor in the Moscow Government and Head of the Department for Transport and Road Infrastructure Development, Maksim Liksutov.

As the Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre Yuri Solomin noted that now Metro passengers will be able to learn more facts from the history the oldest Russian theatre.

March 28 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer Maxim Gorky (1868-1936). The creative union of our theatre and Gorky’s drama began in 1919 with the staging of his play «The Old Man» and continues to this day. Over a hundred years the list of plays that were staged in the Maly Theatre included: «The Old Man» (1919), «Enemies» (1933), «Barbarians» (1941), «The Philistines» (1946), «Vassa Zheleznova» (1952), «Summerfolk» (1964) ), «The Old Man» (1968), «Dostigayev and Others» (1971), « Counterfeit Money» (1972), «Foma Gordeev» (1981), «The Zykovs» (1985), «Eccentrics» (1996), «The Children of The Sun» (2008), « Vassa Zheleznova . The First Version» (2016).

Today we are sharing with you two videos: two last productions of the Gorky’s plays on the Maly’s stage: «The Children of the Sun» (staged by Adolf Shapiro) and Vassa Zheleznova . The First Version» (staged by Vladimir Beylis).

They walked down the catwalk in costumes from five theatre’s productions dedicated to the Time of Troubles.The costumes were presented by Alyona Okhlupina, Aksinya Pustylnikova, Alexander Vershinin, AlekseyFaddeev, Mikhail Fomenko, Dmitriy Marin, Mikhail Martyanov, Ivan Porodnov and Grigoriy Skryapkin. We are pleased to inform you that in May 2018, a new edition of the festival «OSTROVSKY IN THE HOUSE OF OSTROVSKY» will be held at the Maly Theatre. The festival is a tribute to the memory of the great Russian playwright. This year's edition marks the 195th anniversary of Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky.

This year the festival's program includes six theatres. According to tradition, it will be opened by the Maly Theatre. All the performances will be shown on the Main Stage.

May 14 - «WOLVES AND SHEEP» (Rybinsk Drama Theatre, directed by Pyotr Orlov). The show shall start at 19:00.

May 15 -«DIAMOND CUT DIAMOND» (Moscow Provincial Theatre, staged by Sergey Bezrukov). The show shall start at 19:00.

May 16 - «WOLVES AND SHEEP» (Nizhny Novgorod Academic Drama Theatre named after M. Gorky, staged by Alla Reshetnikova). The show shall start at 19:00.

May 17 - «IT'S NOT ALL SHROVETIDE FOR THE CAT» (Riga Mikhail Chekhov Russian Theatre, staged by Igor Konyaev). The show shall start at 19:00. Closing of the festival.

On World Theatre Day (WTD) which is celebrated this year on 27 March 2018, a special theatre show will take place in the Maly Theatre’s Shchepkinsky foyer. Before the evening performance of «Tsar Boris», which is the final part of the famous A.K. Tolstoy trilogy, artists of the Maly Theatre will walk down the catwalk in costumes from five theatre’s productions dedicated to the Time of Troubles.

There will be a theatrical runway show with costumes from the following productions of the Maly Theatre:

• «Dmitry the Pretender and Vasily Shuisky» by Alexander Ostrovsky, staged in 2007 by Vladimir Dragunov (costume designer – Larisa Lomakina);
• «Tsar Ivan the Terrible» by Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy, directed by Vladimir Dragunov in 1995;
• «Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich» by Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy, directed by Boris Ravenskikh in 1973 (costumes were created by the famous Soviet theatre designer, graphic artist, People's Artist of the RSFSR and the chief designer of the Maly Theatre from 1974 to 1999, Evgeny Ivanovich Kumankov);
• «Tsar Ivan the Terrible» by Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy, staged in 1944 costume designer - Evgeny Ivanovich Kumankov).

The show will end with the presentation of costumes from «Boris Godunov» (1937), restored specially for the show.

All costumes presented within the show are the property of the Maly Theatre and the pride of its museum collection.

On February 19 the Leo Tolstoy Museum hosted an evening dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the first production of Leo Tolstoy's play «The Power of Darkness» and the 10th anniversary of the performance on the stage of the Maly Theatre. People's Artist of the USSR Yuri Solomin, People's Artists of Russia Irina Muravyova and Vladimir Nosik and the actor of the Maly Theatre Aleksey Faddeev were among the special guests of the evening. From March 6 to April 3, 2018 an exhibition entitled «On the cutting edge of time. The small stage. Moscow.1917 - 1932» will take place in the exhibition hall of the Elysium Gallery of the Central House of Artists. The exhibition celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Elysium Gallery. The Maly Theatre presented five sketches for the performances of 1924 - 1930.

The Maly Theatre puts on display the following artists:

Vladimir Evgenievich Egorov (set design drawings for «The Ladies' Battle » by Eugène Scribe and Ernest Legouvé, costume sketches for «The Gift of the Magi» by O. Henry);

Ivan Sergeevich Fedotov (two costume sketches for «Zagmuk» by A.G Glebov);

Nina Evseevna Eisenberg (costume sketches for «The Bourgeois Gentleman» by Jean-Baptiste Molière).

It is worth getting an exhibition catalogue that includes works of 24 artists, including images of 12 unique items from the Maly Theatre's Fine Arts Fund and rare data on the Maly Theatre Studio (1922 - 1932) headed by N.A. Smirnova and V.N. Pashennaya, since 1926 headed by the chief director of the Studio F.N. Kaverin.
