Congratulations to Aleksey on this new and well-deserved title. We would like to wish him great success, interesting roles ahead, motivation and dedication and inexhaustible inspiration!

These days the directorate of the independent Audience Choice Award «Star Of The Theatre-Goer» is counting the votes. However due to a large number of new productions that are coming out at the end of the season, the Board of the festival has decided to extend the deadline for the application submission.

So, you have 10 extra days to make you choice. Which premiere, in your opinion, is the best one and deserves the award? Who played the most interesting roles? Which theatre is your favorite? The award has 15 nominations and it is the only Russian award in the field of theatrical art, which has the status of an independent Audience Choice Award.

The long list will be announced and put up for voting in June. By September in each nomination three leaders will be determined and voting on the shortlist will begin. And the results will be announced on the first Monday in December at a grand ceremony in the Vakhtangov Theatre. Hurry up! Every single vote counts!

To celebrate Alexander Pushkin's birthday, the Maly Theatre prepared a special gift for our younger spectators.

On June 6 at 14.00 we invite you to A.I.Sumbatov-Yuzhin's Memorial Apartment for the one-woman show «The Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights» performed by Maly Theatre's actress Varvara Andreeva.

Pushkin's fairy tales are the standard of the Russian literary language. Thanks to the melodic verse of his fairy tales, they easily reveal the author's ideas, and are easily understood even by the smallest child.

«The Tale of the Dead Princess» is a story about the value of inner beauty, not outer beauty, and the magic power of true love that conquers all.

The performance is accompanied by music by Saint-Saëns. Duration of the performance - 40 minutes.

We remind you that our train operates on the Zamoskvoretskaya (green) line of Moscow's metro.

The Maly Theatre's train was launched thanks to the support of the Department for Transport and Road Infrastructure Development of the Moscow City Government , the Maly Theatre, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation and the Moscow metro.

New production, based on the novel written by Vladimir Medinskiy, premiered at the Maly Theatre. Vladimir Medinskiy’s historical epic The Wall (Stena) is about the siege of Smolensk by Sigismund III, King of Polandduring the Polish-Russian War of 1609-1618.

This is the first novel written by Russian Culture Minister. According to the plot, brave Russians fight back against immoral Europeans. Patriotic speeches are heard from the stage. Because of faith, murders are committed, because of faith exploits are performed. Before handing the book to print, the text was edited by clergymen. Perhaps, therefore, the answers to questions posed in the novel (for example, why all the troubles in Russia) are in the spirit of the Orthodox Church.

Valeriy Afanasyev, who plays Shein,Voivode of Smolensk, said that the performance was staged in three months. The text was written in a rather modern language with little stylization of the ancient language. Something still had to be changed.

«I stylized some words myself, because some of the lines grated on my ear. After all, this a very stylized production – from props to costumes», said People's Artist of
Russia Valeriy Afanasyev.

Bright, exuberant costumes, video projections of military disasters, impressive settings in the form of fortress walls. For this production the theatre ordered a new turntable.

«You tell me, if there is any production now that would talk about the history in such a patriotic style? For two years they kept this fortress and repelled their attacks. And Medinsky added some interesting details thus making the whole story very exciting», - shared the director, People's Artist of Russia Vladimir Beylis.

The author of the novel refused to accept royalties for the performance, giving money for the revival of the Smolensk fortress wall.

For the second year in a row the memorial apartment of Alexander Ivanovich Sumbatov-Yuzhin takes part in the traditional All-Russian action "Night at the Museum". Last year, young artists of the Maly Theatre Stanislav Soshnikov and Alexander Naumov read the satires written by Vlas Doroshevich about the artist Yuzhin and the Maly Theatre.

Last Saturday, on May 19, the guests could "walk" through the streets of old Moscow: they went down to the Neglinka River, went to the Testov's pub, treated themselves to the famous rolls with raisins in the Filippov bakery, visited the artful barbers... Artists of the Maly Theatre talked about Moscow, described by V. A. Gilyarovsky, the one that existed at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, when Alexander Ivanovich Sumbatov-Yuzhin moved and changed several apartments before settling on Bolshoy Palashevsky pereulok, 5/1.

Today is the last day of our festival that brought us an unexpected journey of emotions.Memories and live recordings from this year's festival will be published shortly. Today we shall start, as expected, from the very beginning - with a press-conference that took place at the Maly Theatre on May 11 and launched the XII International Festival «Ostrovsky in the House of Ostrovsky».

On May 11 within the framework of the 12th International Theatre Festival "Ostrovsky in the House of Ostrovsky" an the evening from the cycle "A Talk Before The Performance" in A.I. Sumbatova-Yuzhin's Memorial Apartment. The guests of the evening were representatives of the Yugoslav Drama Theatre.

During the evening that was hosted by candidate of art criticism, leading research associate of the State Institute of Art Studies, Nataliya Vagapova, unique photos and newspaper articles, dedicated to the tour of Yuzhin in March 1901 in Serbia - were presented to the guests. Alexander Ivanovich was elected honorary director of the Serbian Royal Theatre and was honoured with a Serbian Order of St. Sava, 3rd Class Commander; Type III.

Among the honorary guests of the evening were General Manager of the Yugoslav Drama Theatre Tamara Vučković Manojlović and dramaturg Miloš Krečković, who talked about the performance "A Profitable Position" that was shown within the framework of the festival as well as about their love of the Russian classics and the Russian theatre. The evening turned out to be very warm and friendly, the guests answered the questions of the audience with pleasure and promised to come again with tours to Moscow.

"Ostrovsky in the House of Ostrovsky." The Maly Theatre's festival dedicated to the 195th anniversary since the birth of "Russia's Shakespeare" continues.

In the festival's program are performances presented by theatres from various cities across Russia. This year, foreign theatre collectives are taking part in the festival for the first time. Its take on a play "A Profitable Position" was presented by the Yugoslav Drama Theatre (Belgrade, Serbia). The Riga Mikhail Chekhov Russian Theatre will close the festival on May 17 with "It's Not All Shrovetide For The Cat".

The guest of our studio of Russia-K channel is Deputy Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre Olga Galakhova.

The Maly Theatre’s company went on tour to Yaroslavl. From May 13 to 16 the artists will perform «It's Not All Shrovetide for the Cat» and «Marriage» on the stage of the Volkov Drama Theatre.

The Artistic director of the Maly Theatre, People's Artist of the USSR, Yuri Solomin in an interview said that at the local Volkov Theatre, which is considered to be the first Russian professional theatre, he feels cozy and comfortable and recollects his childhood. According to Solomin, for the first time he visited the Volkov Theatre about 25-30 years ago. As back then, the atmosphere of the theatre is very warm and friendly. «I'm talking about my сurrent feelings, I recollect my childhood,» the artist said.

Answering the question about whether he feels that special energy of the walls of the Volkov Theatre, Solomin noticed: «I liked it when I came here on tour, and I like this theatre because it's a real Theatre! Boxes, circles ... I like everything. It's very appeasing. And that remains memorable long after.»

He explained that he likes it when the appearance of the theatre does not undergo any drastic changes. This is what happens, in his opinion, with the Volkov Theatre. «It seems to me that there are things in life that can not be changed. They should not be modified.»

On May 15 Moscow's metro turns 83! For over two months now a special themed carriage, launched on the World Theatre Day, and dedicated to the Maly Theatre has been running along the green line of Moscow’s subway. We are glad that this fascinating project joined our teams. We wish one of the most beautiful metros in the world many more years of prosperity and success and we wish passengers to experience a ride in one of its unique trains.

XII International festival «Ostrovsky in the House of Ostrovsky» will open its doors on May 11. This year's programme, includes an exhibition, dedicated to 195 years since the birth of the great Russian playwright AlexanderOstrovsky that will take on the Main stage and a very special evening in A.I.Sumbatov-Yuzhin's Memorial Apartment that will feature our colleagues from the Yugoslav Drama Theatre.

The evening will be hosted by Nataliya Mikhailovna Vagapova,an art history PhD, theatre critic, leading researcher of the State Institute of Art Studies, a specialist in the theatre of South Slavic peoples of Central Europe and the Balkans. She will talk about the history of Russian-Serbian theatre relations, including Yuzhin's visits to Serbia the history of his productions in Serbia and his friendship with the great Serbian playwrights (Branislav Nusic and others) and about the modern Serbian theatre.

We are very proud to announce that People's Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Ivanovich Ezepov has been presented with the The Order of Alexander Nevsky, for “merits in development of national culture and art, and many years of fruitful activity”. This medal is one of the highest ranking honours of the Russian Federation.The document was signed by Vladimir Putin on May 3, 2018. For the second time this year A.I.Sumbatov-Yuzhin's Memorial Apartment is taking part in Moscow’s «Museum Night». And yet again its interiors turn into a stage for the artists of the Maly Theatre. This year we would like to invite our spectators to stroll along the alleys of the old theatre Moscow.

Having moved to the city of Moscow in 1882, Yuzhin changes multiple addresses until he settles in the house of the Bolshoy Palashevskiy lane in 1892. He will stay in the apartment number 7 for 35 years until the day of his death. This was a truly theatre "district" of Moscow. Among the residents of the district in different years were the artists of the Maly Theatre K.N. Poltavtsev, A.P. Lensky, M.N. Ermolova, A.A. Ostuzhev, etc. Vladimir Gilyarovsky, a renowned writer and journalist was a friend to many of them. In his works he reflected the breath and atmosphere of Moscow of the end of the 19th century.

Young artists of the Maly Theatre will help us to plunge into the ambiance of that time.

On November 26, 2017 an exceptional evening called «"Boldly for the first time I take complete responsibility for his entire life": Alexander Yuzhin and Alexander Ostuzhev» was held in A.I.Sumbatov-Yuzhin's Memorial Apartment. The evening is part of the cycle «The history of one friendship» and is dedicated to 160th anniversary since the birth of Alexander Ivanovich Sumbatov-Yuzhin (1857 - 1927). The evening was held by the Chief Funds Curator of the Maly Theatre's museum Nadezhda Telegina. Honored Artist of Russia Alexander Beliy and artist Alexander Driven recited fragments of letters and diaries of Alexander Ostuzhev and AIexander Sumbatov-Yuzhin.
