We are pleased to announce that a new issue of our newspaper came out recently. It features interviews with Boris Nevzorov, Inna Ivanova, Irina Leonova, Olga Zhevakina and Olga Pleshkova, a guide through the stage history of King Lear at the Maly Theatre, along with articles on theatre’s renovation, its stage, the destiny of Goldoni’s plays on the stage of the theatre, and much more.

The Maly Theatre newspaper has been published since 1935, and it was revived in 2016.

The institutional newspaper Maly Theatre was published from October 15, 1935 to June 29, 1941 Communist Party committee’s agency (later on the party bureau), the local committee and Maly Theatre’s administration. 152 large-format issues were published having from 2 to 8 pages of printed text (generally 4 printed pages) with a circulation of 500 to 800 copies. In 1939 - 1941 the newspaper was distributed on a subscription basis by the trade-union representatives at the workshops.

In 2000 - 2012 years «The "Maly"» newspaper was published in the A-4 format and consists of 4 to 12 printed pages. 43 issues were published along with some unnumbered special issues. At first it was a monthly newspaper, with a circulation of 995 copies, then it was published irregularly with a limited circulation. The newspaper was sold for the audience at the theatre.

The revived quarterly Maly Theatre newspaper of a large format has been published since 2016 with a circulation of 2,000 copies. The newspaper consists of 20 to 28 pages. This is a free newspaper for the guests of the Maly Theatre.

On 20 May the Maly Theatre and A.I.Sumbatov-Yuzhin's Memorial Apartment for the first time took part in «Museum Night 2017» in Moscow with a special program entitled «About the theatre with humor. Vlas Doroshevich.»The satirical articles written by the famous critic were recited by the actors of the Maly Theatre - Alexander Naumov and Stanislav Soshnikov. Their recital of the «old Muscovite’s» memoirs sounded like a passionate dialogue between two students, fans of the Maly Theatre, discussing their favorite artists, new plays and productions and ready to turn instantly into the characters of Shakespeare's plays in order to prove to each other that tragedies in fact «end well.»

The evening was a great success and we would like to thank everyone who came along. And great news to those, who could not visit us on May 20! We decided to repeat the event on 21 June. We are happy to invite our spectators to a meeting with People's Artist of Russia Vladimir Alekseevich Dubrovskiy. Vladimir Dubrovskiy has been on Maly Theatre’s stage for almost 50 years, and over these years he created a whole gallery of memorable characters, having played more than 80 roles! Among them are Volodenka («The Golovlyov Family» by M.Y. Saltykov-Shchedrin), Fedotka («Return to One's Circles » by Ion Druţă), Bulanov («The Forest» by A.N. Ostrovsky), Epikhodov («The Cherry Orchard» by A. P. Chekhov), Zagoretsky («Woe from Wit» by A.S.Griboyedov), Kuchumov («Money to Burn» by A.N.Ostrovsky), Chugunov («Wolves and Sheep» by A.N.Ostrovsky), Isai Danilych Khalymov («The Heart is not a Stone» by A.N.Ostrovsky), etc.

During these years he was lucky enough to work with great directors and actors. Vladimir Alekseevich, being an excellent storyteller, will share his memories of working with them with great pleasure. During this meeting Dubrovskiy will tell about his "own" Maly Theatre - his roles, performances and events, about the history of the Maly, the history of the theatre that we are creating now.

The Maly Theatre came to Kursk within a framework of their touring program. The program is supported by «Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation», founded by Alisher Usmanov. The Maly Theatre presented to Kursk audience its production of a pre-revolutionary version of Maxim Gorky's play «Vassa Zheleznova».

During the press conference, the director of the play Vladimir Beylis remarked that the story about the division of the family’s inheritance is still relevant today. The fragile woman Vassa, brilliantly played by Lyudmila Titova, is a woman of iron will and a powerful matriarch. She runs the family business alone struggling to preserve it for her children. However she faces misunderstanding and cruelty. The title character of Vassa is one of the most difficult in the world’s dramatic art. It is not a mere coincidence that Vladimir Beylis chose this classical work – he studied with Yuri Bure and decided to present this gift to the citizens of Kursk.

Lyudmila Titova, People's Artist of Russia: «When people come to the box office they generally ask for something light and cheerful, as supposedly it's very hard to live nowadays. In fact, this is not true. I actually heard that a lot of playgoers after seeing Vassa, quite the opposite, leave with a sense of light, purification. And, the task of the theatre, of art is to induce catharsis, after which something new opens up in you. On the contrary, the glimpse of light and hope and the desire to live.»

On June 16 on tour in Kursk Mikhail Fomenko will debut as Mitrich in Leo Tolstoy’s drama «The Power of Darkness».

On June 19 on tour in Bryansk Honoured Artist of Russia Sergey Kagakov will debut as Mukhoyarov in «Truth is Good, but Happiness is Better» by Alexander Ostrovsky.

A screening of Denis Brodskiy's documentary «His Majesty the Actor» dedicated to People's Artist of the USSR Yuri Solomin and meeting with Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre and the filmmakers will take place on July 6, 2017 at 19:30 at Oktyabr cinema (Cinema «October») on Noviy Arbat (New Arbat Avenue).

We will encounter our hero during a very important and exciting period of his life. You will see something that is generally hidden from viewers' eyes.

On May 27th, Maly Theatre’s production «Re-Reading Chekhov» was performed at the State Literary and Memorial Museum-Reserve of A.P. Chekhov, in Melikhovo. The play was presented within the framework of the XVIII International Theatre Festival «Melikhovskaya Vesna».

Journalist Pavel Podkladov reports on the event: « «Re-Reading Chekhov», Maly Theatre’s production became the grand and to some extent touching finale of the powerful symphony called «Melikhovskaya Vesna». Touching because this festival has quite a story behind it. The tradition of Melikhovo theatrical meetings dates back to 1982. It was then, when 35 years ago, the actors of Leo N. Tolstoy Lipetsk Drama Theatre for the first time performed «The Seagull» on the veranda of Chekhov’s "grand duchy" , staged by Vladimir Pakhomov. Treplev and Zarechnaya in that play were played by young actors Olga Pakhomova (Ovchinnikova) and Yuriy Ilyin.Thirty-five years later they met in Melikhovo at yesterday's play! Yuriy Ilyin was on stage, and Olga Aleksandrovna was sitting in the front row! But that's just part of the story… This light-hearted performance was staged by Olga Pakhomova's daughter - Elena Olenina, who, together with her mother, came to Melikhovo in 1982! Elena Olenina together with a team of like-minded colleagues from the Maly Theatre very vividly "re-read" Chekhov, and as a result managed to produce a very funny, "tasteful" performance, brilliantly played by the masters of the oldest drama theatre in Russia.

The director in her introduction to the performance in the festival’s brochure suggested that only the artists of the Maly Theatre can deliver so skillfully Chekhov’s texts. Chekhov’s "weirdos" often find themselves in ridiculous situations thus bringing great please to the audience, sitting on the benches opposite the veranda of the main house. And even in spite of extreme weather conditions no one has left the "battlefield". And then the whole "auditorium" gave a stormy ovation to the wonderful actors and director! Now is not the right time to provide a detailed analysis of the performance, it's still ahead. I can only say that this production turned out to a worthy denouement of the saga called «Melikhovskaya Vesna 2017».»

On 11 June Aleksandr Driven will debut as Prince Irakly Stratonych Dulebov in «Talents and Admirers» by Alexander Ostrovsky.

On June 7th we recall a remarkable actor and a great man, Honored Artist of Russia, Alexander Yuryevich Ovchinnikov, who would have turned 70 (1947 - 1997).

In October Muscovites and guests of Russia’s capital will have a unique chance to see Valentin Rasputin's legendary elegiac novel «Farewell to Matyora» onstage. During the celebration of the days of Irkutsk Region, on 16 October, the actors of Irkutsk Academic Drama Theater of N. Okhlopkov will be playing in this grandiose and beloved by Irkutsk audience production on the stage of the Maly Theatre.

«Farewell to Matyora» is not just a story about a deliberate flooding of a fictional Siberian village which is to be evacuated and cleared so that a hydroelectric power station could be constructed on the Angara River. It is not even a narrative about the loss of the nature to technological progress. And this is not even an epic about the downfall of indigenous Russian people and Russian peasant culture. This is a story about us drowning our past, breaking the bonds with our origins, with our home ground and forgetting about what is truly dear to our heart and our memory.

It is no surprise that the theatre from Irkutsk Oblast, the area where Valentin Rasputin was born and lived much of his life, produced the best staging of this piercing and truthful tale. Rasputin loved Okhlopkov Drama Theatre, highly appreciated the skills of the actors and directors of the theatre. Rasputin trusted the staging of his works to his fellow countrymen. And the theatre in turn took great care of ideas and messages that the author wanted to convey to the readers.

«Farewell to Matyora» was staged in Irkutsk by the famous Moscow director Gennadiy Shaposhnikov. Like all the works of the master, this production immediately enriched the theatre’s repertoire. Most performances are sold out months in advance, and some devoted admirers have seen «Matyora» several times.

The production will be playing on Maly Theatre’s Main stage on October 16, 2017.Tickets are already on sale!

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia visited the Maly State Academic Theatre of Russia on May 31, 2017 to see the adaptation of Alexander Ostrovsky’s classic play «Talents and Admirers».

Before the performance Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church was greeted by the Artistic director of the Maly Theatre, People's Artist of the USSR, Yuri Solomin.

We would like to offer you a recording of a TV program that aired on «Russia Culture» TV channel.

The inner circle of the legendary director, People's Artist of Russia, Leonid Kheyfets turned out to be rather wide as his teaching experience is over 45 years. His students, graduates from different years, who are now successful actors and directors from the cinema and the theatre, have gathered in a studio to talk about the great master. The atmosphere reigning in the studio was rather casual, which is probably Kheyfets’ signature style thanks to which the master becomes good friends with his students, in spite of the age difference and a different experience.

What is Kheyfets’ selection criterion? How does the master choose his students? How does he achieve truthfulness from his pupils? What suggestions does he give them, and how do they manage to be so successful and in demand in their profession? Those are the questions that are being discussed in «The Inner Circle of Leonid Kheyfets.»
