MALY THEATRE CAME TO KURSK
The Maly Theatre came to Kursk within a framework of their touring program. The program is supported by «Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation», founded by Alisher Usmanov. The Maly Theatre presented to Kursk audience its production of a pre-revolutionary version of Maxim Gorky's play «Vassa Zheleznova».
During the press conference, the director of the play Vladimir Beylis remarked that the story about the division of the family’s inheritance is still relevant today. The fragile woman Vassa, brilliantly played by Lyudmila Titova, is a woman of iron will and a powerful matriarch. She runs the family business alone struggling to preserve it for her children. However she faces misunderstanding and cruelty. The title character of Vassa is one of the most difficult in the world’s dramatic art. It is not a mere coincidence that Vladimir Beylis chose this classical work – he studied with Yuri Bure and decided to present this gift to the citizens of Kursk.
Lyudmila Titova, People's Artist of Russia: «When people come to the box office they generally ask for something light and cheerful, as supposedly it's very hard to live nowadays. In fact, this is not true. I actually heard that a lot of playgoers after seeing Vassa, quite the opposite, leave with a sense of light, purification. And, the task of the theatre, of art is to induce catharsis, after which something new opens up in you. On the contrary, the glimpse of light and hope and the desire to live.»
