On May 28 the Maly State Academic Theatre of Russia (Bolshaya Ordynka street, 69) with present for the 400th time the staging of Alexander
Ostrovsky’s play «It’s A Family Affair – We’ll Settle It Ourselves».

The performance that premiered in April 1996 is among the «long-lifers» of the theatre’s repertoire. This famous classic play by Alexander Ostrovsky is included in literature curriculum at schools, and it is particularly pleasant for us to know that for many children the acquaintance with the work of the great playwright begins with the performance of the Maly Theatre. Several generations have been raised on A. Chetvyorkin's production, however «It’s A Family Affair – We’ll Settle It Ourselves» is loved by children and adults alike - the story of a merchant who tried to deceive creditors and betrayed by his own daughter does not leave anyone indifferent. The great literary basis of the play, embellished by the brilliant scenography by Gregory Belov, the cheerful music by Nikolai Parfenyuk and the lively dances staged by Olga Chetvyorkina and the superb acting - some of the best roles were played in Viktor Bortsov, Afanasy Kochetkov, Galina Dyomina, Yulia Burygina turned this production into a real treasure of Maly Theatre’s repertoire.

We warmly congratulate the cast, the whole creative team on their remarkable success and we do sincerely hope that «It’s A Family Affair – We’ll Settle It Ourselves» will have a long and happy stage longevity!

The Maly Theatre’s staff prepared a special video for the 80th anniversary of People's Artist of Russia, Vladimir Beylis that was shown during the week of his jubilee performances at the foyer of the theatre. The video also features messages from his colleagues, expressing their heartiest congratulation on the occasion of his birthday. Today we would like to share it with our website visitors.

On May 27th, Maly Theatre’s production «Re-Reading Chekhov» will be shown at the State Literary and Memorial Museum-Reserve of A.P. Chekhov, in Melikhovo. The performance will be presented within the framework of the XVIII International Theatre Festival «Melikhovskaya Vesna». The show starts at 20:00.

Journalist Pavel Podkladov on the upcoming event: «... there will be a real feast on the night of May 27! At 20-00 the Maly Theatre’s company will appear on the veranda of the Main House of A.P. Chekhov. They will showcase a performance entitled «Re-Reading Chekhov», a hilarious performance, based on Chekhov’s early short comic stories, which he wrote under the pseudonym Antosha Chekonte. The highlight of the performance is, in the first place, the text of the young Chekhov that can only be recited eloquently and played with such a taste by the actors of the Maly Theatre. Onstage is a company of actors that resembles a small troupe of the touring theatre. Nine actors and nine suitcases with stickers rather known to those who are familiar with the vicissitudes of Chekhov’s life: Yalta, Taganrog, Sakhalin, Melikhovo, Lopasnya ... The performance is only accompanied by the sound of the wheels of the passing trains and the ringing of the station bell resembling the sound of his Melikhov "fellowman" calling to remember, wait, love and believe. I have to remind my readers that some characters in this play are historical figures whose fate was linked with the Museum-Reserve Melikhovo. Actually the tradition of Melikhovo theatrical meetings started in 1982. Lipetsk theatre is considered to be the founding father of the festival - the actors of this theatre were the first time in the history of the Museum to step on the veranda of the Melikhovo manor to perform «The Seagull».

Elena Olenina, the performance director of current play, as a young girl, was among the audience in 1982. Her mother, Olga Pakhomova (Ovchinnikova), who was herself a young actress back then, played Nina Zarechnaya and took her daughter with her. Yuriy Ilyin, the Honored Artist of Russia and laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation played Treplev. By the way, Yuriy can be called an absolutely Chekhovian man and actor. After Treplev, he played Voinitsky in «Uncle Vanya», Petya Trofimov and Gayev in «The Cherry Orchard», Ivanov in «Ivanov», Aplombov in «The Wedding»,etc. In the current performance he will appear on the stage as an author. To be honest with you, I'm terribly jealous of Yuri Borisovich, who was lucky enough to live so many lives of Chekhov's characters! And I do hope that he will enrich his acting career with more "Chekhovian" roles.

By the way, talking about getting tickets for the above-mentioned performances… As I already noted, you cannot get them at the box office. But since the performance is taking place outdoors, everyone will get a chance to see it from the branches of the trees growing next to the Main House.»

Artists of the Maly State Academic theatre of Russia shared their impressions of Buryatia. During the press conference that took place on May 22, 2017 People's Artist of Russia Boris Nevzorov that during the tour the theatre company managed to visit the surroundings of Lake Baikal and this trip will become a wonderful theatrical anecdote.

- We managed to travel to Baikal and the Ambassadorial Monastery. Baikal was quite quiet, calm, transparent, and, moreover, we were very lucky with the weather, and one of the theatre staff even managed to bathe in the cold waters of the great lake. Everyone knows the theatrical environment is full of yarns, and most of the fascinating stories that we later share with our colleagues happen during the tours. We will remember our trip to Lake Baikal as a wonderful theatrical anecdote, a sweet memory, we really enjoyed everything that happened here, - said Nevzorov.

According to Vladimir Cherkasov, the deputy general director of the Federal Center for Supporting Touring Activities established under the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the theatre that shall visit one or another region of Russia, is selected upon the initiative of the local Ministry of Culture.

- In Buryatia, big tours have been held since 2014. Not every region of the country is honored to host two more theatres. We have established good and strong friendly relations with your Republic and that is why we keep on coming back here. I’m not quite sure now which theatre should will bring here next year, - Cherkasov said.

It is to be recalled that the Maly Theatre will showcase «Wolves and Sheep» by Alexander Ostrovsky on the stage of The State Russian Drama Theatre named after N. Bestuzhev within the framework of the federal program «Big Tours 2017». According to People's Artist of Russia Lyudmila Titova, this is one of the best performances of the Maly Theatre.

- This is one of our best performances, a production that we took on tour around Russia and abroad. It has always been a huge success. We've been playing it for 20 years already. You can stage this play in different ways, but the classical production of our theatre will always be interesting and in demand, the one that draws full house, - mentioned Titova.

As Timur Tsybikov, the Minister of Culture of Buryatia Republic remarked, the tickets for both performances were sold out within two days back in March. It is to be once again mentioned that the Maly Theatre sends touring productions around the country under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Russia within the framework of the federal program «Big Tours 2017». St. Petersburg Bolshoi Puppet Theater will also come to Buryatia in September 2017 as part of the federal program.

«It's Not All Shrovetide for the Cat» is the second performance of the Maly State Academic theatre of Russia on the Trans-Baikal stage. The play was written by Alexander Ostrovsky in 1871 and is as relevant as ever. Love or rather self-interest? Our reporters saw the production.

The news that young Agnia has met a young man, the nephew of a local rich merchant, uplifted her mother’s spirits. Soon, Ippolit appears on the stage - a timid romantic, in love with Agnia. And here is the first kiss.

Unfortunately, they do not have enough time to finish sorting out their relationship. Ermil Zotych enters the Kruglovs’ house. The eyes of an elderly merchant are bent on young Agnia. This is where the story of the power of money and love intrigue begins. The agon between the rich, yet greedy and despotic Ermil Zotych and the poor but noble Ippolit arises. And the girl finds herself on the horns of a dilemma…the eternal question.

Anna Volchik: «As if you are experiencing the same emotions: the young generation really has to choose between the young and the rich. That’s the choice. I enjoyed it a lot! What would you would chose? I would have chosen a young one, because it takes one thing at a time, it’s not all Shrovetide for the cat.»

Agnia arrives at the same decision, after having a meaningful conversation with her mother. Meanwhile Ippolit gets his own way. He finds the courage to let his relative know that he is going to propose to Agnia. The merchant decides to have the laugh on his nephew and accompanies him to Kruglovs’ house as he is absolutely certain that Agnia already belongs to him. He makes a qualified fool of himself. Ermil Zotych is outraged declaiming that there is no order in this world at all, and that the poor are being too proud, instead of prostrating themselves before him. To which Agnia’s mother responds: «All good things must come to an end.»

At this time, Hippolytus achieves his. Gathering with the spirit, he says that he is going to get married to Agnia. The merchant decides to expose the nephew of a fool and goes with him to the house of the Kruglovs, because he is sure that Agnia already belongs to him. Only here in a bad light is the very Ermil Zotych.

- It triggers emotions, I can’t fully convey them, they are so deep, internal, I really loved it! And I'm stunned, I’m floating in ecstasy.

- I liked very much, the actors played very well, and their acting was very intense. I was actually driven to tears by the end of the performance. It is such a pity that we do not have the chance to see such people onstage very often, I would love to see them more often.

At the evening with People's Artist of the USSR Yuri Solomin that took place on May 16 at the Officers’ House in Chita, the Acting Governor of Trans-Baikal Territory Nataly Zhdanova awarded the actor with a badge of honor «For the diligent contribution for the benefit of the Trans-Baikal Territory».

A lot of Trans-Baikal admirers came to see their prominent fellow townsman in person. During the evening a documentary entitled «His Majesty the Actor. Yuri Solomin» was shown, a film that was shot by Solomin’s younger colleagues and that chronicles his life.The actor himself told a lot of fascinating facts about his background. That is how the audience learned that the stage of the Officers’ House was a start of the artist’s creative path. In 1949, when Solomin was still a schoolboy, he used to recite «Vasili Tyorkin» here. This same work by Aleksandr Tvardovsky he read at the entrance exams, when he entered The Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theatre School. Yuri Solomin recalled his childhood memories, talked about his parents, his brother, his teachers and classmates, and about other actors from Chita that he knew personally.

The actor also talked about the Maly Theatre, a theatre that he has headed for almost 30 years. The theatre staff consists of over 750 people, 130 of them are actors. During Solomin’s direction not a single member of the theatre family was fired. Solomin also expressed the hope for the fruitful cooperation of the Maly Theatre with the Trans-Baikal drama, and promised to bring master classes to Chita. Solomin received a lot of gifts and flowers from the Minister of Culture of the region Elena Mikhailova and the director of the Officers’ House, Sergei Zherebtsov. Artists of the «Trans-baikal» folk theatre performed the songs for the honored guest.

«The Adjutant of His Excellency», Captain Arseniev from the film Dersu Uzala, surgeon Gradov from «Moskovskaya saga» - more than a hundred roles, a long creative path of the great artist. People's Artist of the USSR, Artistic Director of the Maly State Academic Theatre of Russia Yuri Solomin has come to his hometown.

The first day of the tour in Chita, Yuri Solomin started with a stroll along the quiet streets of his childhood.

I have no idea, what’s over there now, but I do remember there was a railway club. My father used to work there. We went further, where the Criminal Investigation Division is located, and if I’m not mistaken, and there was a house that was called the actors’ house. It is a corner house, then there is a garden, and behind the garden it was our house. We had a room in a communal flat. That I remember. Oh, that’s the house, but it is renovated. It used to have different windows. How did I recognize it? There is a basement. Vitaliy was born there, and in 1941 me and my father took him from the hospital. I remember how I went to school in 1943, school number 4, on the right...» - Are you a Muscovite or native of Chita? – «You know, I'm not a Muscovite that is for sure. My whole family is not from Moscow, but we have been living there for more than half a century, so I do love. Yet again, I love the old Moscow. I studied at Shchepkin Theatrical School, when I came to Moscow... It is the oldest theatre school in Russia. It is over 200 years old. The greatest professors, artists and directors of the past used to teach there. It is hardly possible to forget them, as they lay the groundwork of wisdom and knowledge.»

In 1988 Yuri Solomin was elected Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre by his fellow actors. And since then the theatre has become his lifelong love

On May 4, the Honored Artist of Russia, Vasiliy Dakhnenko, will debut as Pavel Sergeevich Shchetkin in Sergei Naidenov’s play «Vanyushin's Children».

Passengers and guests of Sheremetyevo international airport are kindly invited to see the photo exhibition entitled «From the Maly Theatre to the front» that is held in the terminal E of Sheremetyevo international airport (2-nd floor). The exhibition is dedicated to Maly Theatre’s activities during the Great Patriotic War. This exposition is a tribute to the memory and expression of gratitude to those, who supported the fighting spirit of the Red Army on their way to the great Victory.

In 1941, the artists of the theatre were among the first ones to take part in the work of front-line brigades, performing in military units and at the hospitals. In 1943 the Front line branch of the Maly Theatre was established, whose duty was the artistic service of the active military units.

Over 2700 front line performances and concerts of the Maly Theatre units and its Front line branch were given during the war. The funds raised by the theatre’s staff in 1944 became the source for building the squadron that was handed over to the army and called «From the Maly Theatre to the front».

Passengers and airport guests will have a unique chance to see the rare images of Igor Ilyinsky, Alexander Ostuzhev, Mikhail Tsaryov, Tatiana Pankova, Elena Gogoleva, Evdokiya Turchaninova, Konstantin Zubov performing at the front. The photos are accompanied by the memoirs of the artists.

«When I went to the front, to be honest, I actually thought that they had more important things to do over there and that we will be such a burden since we were useless, we could not take part in military actions, and, what is more, we will have to take their field rations, their transport and their cribs. It turned out that I was wrong. Since its first days I felt that these trips are really important. We became the living connection between our country and our army. Through us they could feel the fraternal affection, respect and admiration for their modest yet rigorous courage of the whole country. The pilots and soldiers, coming back from combat missions, sometimes did not want to rest or to eat, they were more eager to attend a concert, where they could hear words of encouragement and lose themselves in exciting world of art. Humor in its diverse shades was a permanent companion of these people», wrote Igor Ilyinsky, People's Artist of the USSR.
