May 16 (Ordynka stage) instead of «Mysterious Chest» by Pyotr Karatygin there will be a production of Alexander Ostrovsky’s comedy «It’s A Family Affair – We’ll Settle It Ourselves».

May 29 (Main Stage) there will be an ADDITIONAL performance of «The Life and Love of Monsieur de Moliere» by Mikhail Bulgakov. The performance shall start at 19:00.

June 30 (Main Stage) there will be an ADDITIONAL performance of «The Queen of Spades» by Alexander Pushkin. The performance shall start at 19:00.

Congratulations and happy anniversary to People's Artist of Russia, Vladimir Beylis, who is turning 80 on April 25. We would like to wish him excellent health, inexhaustible inspiration and further creative successes!

From April 22 to 30, the Maly Theatre hosts a memorable week of jubilee performances staged by Vladimir Beylis. On April 29, after the staging of Robert Thomas’ «Eight Loving Women», colleagues and friends will appear on stage to express their congratulations on the occasion of his 80th Birthday.

The Maly Theatre is not called the «House of Ostrovsky» for nothing. The Maly Theatre produces one or two new plays by the great Russian playwright every year that immediately become the theatre’s specialty. Every year it is a great challenge since it is rather hard to reinvigorate Ostrovksy's masterpieces with modern touches. Has Vladimir Dragunov succeeded in bringing fresh perspective on Russian everlasting classics? By Anastasia Egorova.

«Talents and Admirers» premiered on December 20, 1881, in the Maly Theatre. The new production, directed by Vladimir Dragunov is a reconsidered story of an ambitious, talented provincial actress with a focus on modern society and its problems.

«This play touches upon some really important issues, such as soul searching. In my opinion trying to find the meaning of your existence, your destiny and achieving inner harmony in a world at a crossroads with a shifted moral compass, where everything is bought and sold are especially relevant today. How do you know what path to take? » - reflects director Vladimir Dragunov.

The search for the right path begins with the platform. The first scene starts with the railway station setting. And this image accompanies the actors until the finale of the play as a symbol of revery, disorderly life and vanity. According to the director, set designer and composer, the station life becomes the standard of living.

The main character, a young actress Negina runs away with a wealthy admirer Velikatov in pursuit of fame and a better life. The director of the production is convinced that she is an utterly modern character. Negina in Dragunov’s production is performed by a young actress Daria Novoseltseva. It is her first major role.

«Our director Vladimir Dragunov kept on reminding me that Negina is a character. And he says that there are no warm and fuzzy talented people, they have to be strong willed and steel-hearted. If they don’t like something, they will speak out, defend their point of view, their own identity. And it is quite challenging not to be scared of going into such a complicated and ambiguous character, »explains Daria Novoseltseva.

The characters who described in Ostrovsky’s play as «old-style» and «middle-aged», in Dragunov’s production are played by young people, who wanted to combine people of different generations on one stage.

«When we approached this play, these characters, we studied a lot of texts, because Ostrovsky himself adored artists, he loved artists, loved the theatre and, probably, I do not want to affirm that,but it seems to me that Narokov was inspired by Ostrovsky himself», says Aleksandr Ermakov, who portrays Narokov, an assistant director.

«This is a play with a large human volume», says Dragunov about «Talents and Admirers». We produced it quickly – within two months. We wanted to share it with the audience to unburden the mind.

A prominent Russian actor Yevgeny Samoilov would have turned 105 on April 16th.Yevgeny Valerianovich was born in 1912, before the revolution, in the family of the Putilov factory worker. He graduated from the Leningrad Art School, made his stage debut in the early 1930s, and on screen in 1936, as a physical education instructor Grisha in the film «Accidental Encounter». Around that time he was noticed by Vsevolod Meyerhold who invited him to join his own troupe in Moscow. Later he worked in the Moscow Comedy Theatre and the Theatre of the Revolution, and in 1968 he was invited to join the troupe of the Maly Theatre, where he served until the end of his days. Among the most prominent roles played by Yevgeny Samoilov on Maly’s stage are Prince Ivan Shuisky in Aleksey Tolstoy’s «Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich» (1973), Andrea Doria in FriedrichSchiller’s «The Conspiracy of Fiesco in Genoa», Krutitsky in «There Was Not a Single Penny, and Suddenly There is a Dime» by Alexander Ostrovsky, Karp in Alexander Ostrovsky’s «The Forest», Duke's Valet in « Intrigue and Love» by Friedrich Schiller, and others.

Yevgeny Samoilov became one of the brightest stars of the classical period of Soviet cinema., «Hearts of Four», «Six P.M.», «Shchors», «They Fought for Their Country» to name but a few…Everyone who has ever seen Samoilov on screen will remember him forever.

On April 16th Alexander Naumov will debut as Bernouin in Alexander Dumas' «The Youth of Louis XIV».
