YEVGENY SAMOILOV: 105th ANNIVERSARY

A prominent Russian actor Yevgeny Samoilov would have turned 105 on April 16th.Yevgeny Valerianovich was born in 1912, before the revolution, in the family of the Putilov factory worker. He graduated from the Leningrad Art School, made his stage debut in the early 1930s, and on screen in 1936, as a physical education instructor Grisha in the film «Accidental Encounter». Around that time he was noticed by Vsevolod Meyerhold who invited him to join his own troupe in Moscow. Later he worked in the Moscow Comedy Theatre and the Theatre of the Revolution, and in 1968 he was invited to join the troupe of the Maly Theatre, where he served until the end of his days. Among the most prominent roles played by Yevgeny Samoilov on Maly’s stage are Prince Ivan Shuisky in Aleksey Tolstoy’s «Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich» (1973), Andrea Doria in FriedrichSchiller’s «The Conspiracy of Fiesco in Genoa», Krutitsky in «There Was Not a Single Penny, and Suddenly There is a Dime» by Alexander Ostrovsky, Karp in Alexander Ostrovsky’s «The Forest», Duke's Valet in « Intrigue and Love» by Friedrich Schiller, and others.

Yevgeny Samoilov became one of the brightest stars of the classical period of Soviet cinema., «Hearts of Four», «Six P.M.», «Shchors», «They Fought for Their Country» to name but a few…Everyone who has ever seen Samoilov on screen will remember him forever.
