2. «Captains of the Maly Theatre» film screening. The movie is dedicated to the greatest artists in the history of Russian theatre,whose life was inextricably linked to the Maly Theatre. Among them are Alexander Lensky, Alexander Sumbatov-Yuzhin, Prov Sadovsky, Konstantin Zubov, Mikhail Tsaryov, Yuri Solomin, the artistic leaders, responsible for determining the creative vision of the theatre and its repertory, assembling the company and preserving the integrity of the Maly Theatre. The filmmakers tried to examine the question of leadership. Is it possible to remain a leading actor, while being the leader of the group at the same time? In spite of different social backgrounds, types of personality, beliefs and talents, they are all united by the selfless love and attachment to their Home, the Maly Theatre, and their passion and devotion to their vocation.

The screening starts at 12:10. Part 1 (about Yuri Solomin), duration 1 hour 11 minutes.

On March 12th Evgeniy Sorokin will debut as Nikolai Andreevich Shablov in Alexander Ostrovsky’s play «Late Love».

In the current 261st season The Maly Theatre has already presented two premieres: Carlo Goldoni’s comedy «The Servant of Two Masters» (directed by Stefano de Luca) and William Shakespeare's tragedy «King Lear» (directed by Anton Yakovlev). If you enjoyed our productions we encourage you to vote!

On March 1st «King Lear» premiered at the renovated historic stage of the Maly Theatre. The production of this tragic tale by William Shakespeare is staged by Anton Yakovlev.

«In my opinion, this is one of Shakespeare's most difficult plays, both for the analysis and for the understanding. This is a tragic story of a man, spoiled and blinded by the power, authority, and wealth who at one point loses all that.

Lear is both a tragic clown and a director of his own "theater", in which he cannot accept the new reality of what is happening around. And, in spite of all terrible events, almost till the very end Lear does not admit his major, fundamentalerrors. Today I can see people creating parallel realities around themselves, a kind of "mirror-world", where they hide from reality, leaving the responsibilities behind. That is what makes this play so relevant.

In this play there is a phrase, uttered by King Lear during his darkest hour: “When we are born, we cry that we are come to this great stage of fools.” For me that is the main theme of this tragedy. It seems to me that the story does not teach us anything and people keep on repeating the same mistakes again and again, that is a vicious circle… we only find new ways of destroying ourselves and each other.

The Maly Theatre is a theatre with certain traditions and canons. Today this is quite rare for the theatre world. That is why the Maly Theatre is so different from many other theatres. You have to be very careful with the so-called "modern" language. It is quite a challenge to make a production which has to be modern both in form and in content, but with limited possibilities to experiment.

The set design was developed by Maria Rybasova. The essential part of the set belongs to the towers, once adapted to the war and the siege, now they constitute a part of life, and represent a “stage” within a stage. They are the smouldering islands of the war that are ready to get back into the fight at any time.

Costumes were designed by Oksana Yarmolnik. They match perfectly the somber tone of this story, they are timeless and combine features from different eras.»

On December 19th, Maly Theatre has finally raised its curtain at the renovated main stage, for the first time in two years. According to tradition, it reopened with Alexander Griboyedov's play “Woe from Wit” staged by Sergei Zhenovach, the production which is on since 2000. The main role is played by the theatre's artistic director, People's Artist of the USSR, Yuri Solomin. The opening night was attended by the Minister of Culture of Russia, Vladimir Medinsky.

Maly Theatre’s main stage was closed for renovation in the spring of 2014. It was the first time in the building’s history that such extensive work had been done to repair the
building’s facade with new buildings for art exhibitions and storage rooms for stage scenery, decorations and costumes added. The work has been completed almost 2 years ahead of the plan.

The temporary separation is over and we are delighted to welcome the audience back to our house!
