In September the facade of the Maly Theatre for the first time became the canvas for the light and music shows in the framework of the VII Moscow International Festival «Circle of Light». «Circle of Light» is one of the most spectacular and entertaining autumn events in the capital of Russia.

The «Timeless» light show that takes the audience on the engaging voyage through time and space was created specifically for the Maly Theatre. The artists of the Maly Theater: Vasiliy Bochkaryov, Alexander Klyukvin, Alexander Ermakov and Pyotr Abramov took part in the voice-over.

Today we would like to share two video reports that captured both programs of the festival that unfolded on the Theatre Square: "Celestial Mechanics" (which also involved the facade of the Maly Theatre) and "Timeless".

We are proud to present you the exhibition, dedicated to the revived production of «Tsar Boris», a drama by Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy commemorating 200th anniversary of the birth of the playwright. The exhibition includes images and videos from the Maly Theatre archives that cover a rich history of Tolstoy’s theatre stagings: the photos of the artists, costume and set sketches, still images from the productions.

You may find the exhibition in the Spectator's foyer on the 2nd floor (the new «Shchepkinskoe» foyer).

Maly State Academic Theatre of Russia lately revived the production of «Tsar Boris» written by Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy. The premiere commemorates the 200th anniversary of the playwright.

The opening night took place on October 10th. The play recounts the events of the Time of Troubles and touches upon the questions of authority and power, its purpose and its means… the everlasting pressing issues.

The tragedy «Tsar Boris», directed by Vladimir Beylis, first appeared on the Maly Theatre’s stage in 1993. It was an astounding large-scale production with spectacular set design and powerful background music. Over thirty artists were involved. The main role was then played by People's Artist of the Russian Federation Vasiliy Bochkaryov.

In the revived production the role of Tsar Boris is played by People's Artist of Russia Valeriy Afanasyev. The set designer is Joseph Sumbatashvili and the composer is Georgiy Sviridov.

People's Artist of Russia VasilIy Bochkaryov took part in the «KultProsvet» («Cultural Education») TV show that was broadcast on «Tatarstan-24» TV channel, where he talked about the traditions of the Russian Drama Theatre, the principles of the Russian acting classes, the art of transformation, the phenomenon of Ostrovsky. The host of the program is Polina Kastritskaya.

On October 1 the Maly Theatre celebrated the 90th anniversary of People's Artist of Russia Yuri Ivanovich Kayurov. After the production of «The Cherry Orchard», where the hero of an anniversary is playing Firs, an old manservant, the Maly Theatre’s company, headed by the Artistic Director of the theatre Yuri Solomin came onstage. September 29 marks 200 years since the birth of the great Russian playwright Alexander Vasilyevich Sukhovo-Kobylin (1817 - 1903). His satirical plays, notably «Krechinsky's Wedding», always enjoyed the success within the audience of the Maly Theatre. Today we would like to share with you two productions of this play – the first one was staged by Leonid Kheifets in 1971 and the second one was directed in 1997 by Vitaliy Solomin.

People's Artist of Russia Svetlana Amanova took part in the «KultProsvet» («Cultural Education») TV show that was broadcast on «Tatarstan-24» TV channel. The artist of the Maly Theatre talks about the tours of the Maly Theatre in Kazan, national theatres, classical theatre productions, the role of the theatre in raising children, and shares her reflections on Karen Shakhnazarov's film «Anna Karenina» in which she starred. The host of the program is Polina Kastritskaya.

People's Artist of Russia Irina Muravyova received a prize named after popular Soviet comedy director Leonid Gaidai for her contribution to the comedy at the closing ceremony of the 15 Festival of Cinema and Theatre «Amur Autumn» that was held in Blagoveshchensk, RIA Novosti reports.

Yuri Romanov, Mayor of Svobodny, Amur Oblast, Gaidai’s hometown, gave away the prize to the actress of the Maly Theatre. Irina Muravyova worked until 1991 at the Mossovet Theatre, and since 1993 she has been part of the Maly Theatre’s company. She is most well known for her performances in «Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears» (1979), «Karnaval» (1981), «The Most Charming and Attractive » (1985), in addition to working in film and theater, the actress is known for voicing cartoons.

We would like to congratulate Irina Vadimovna on such a significant event and sincerely wish her new creative achievements, health and the brightest colors in life!

From September 23 to 27, 2017 for the very first time the building of the Maly Theatre will become the canvas for light and music shows in the framework of the VII Mosco International Festival «Circle of Light».

Theatre and music classics, architectural masterpieces of the world, rich palette of emotions and true natural pearls of the planet will provide the basis for the scenario of the incredible light show that will be held in the capital of Russia from September 23 to 27 as part of the VII Moscow International Circle of the World festival. Circle of Light Moscow international festival will be held for the seventh time and promises to become one of the most spectacular events of the coming autumn. Traditionally, all video presentations, as well as training seminars for lighting designers and specialists in audiovisual art, are held within the precincts of famous Moscow sites. The admission to all festival venues is free. In 2016 Moscow International festival “The Circle of Light” has reached its highest rates of attendance and references in the media. Within five days of the Festival, it has been visited by 6 million persons.

In 2017 the «Circle of Light» festival will be featured at six venues. The opening ceremony of the festival will be held on September 23 in Ostankino. Theatre Square, already familiar to the regular visitors of the Circle of Light festival, for the first time will engage the facades of the Bolshoi and Maly Theatres. Two thematic light shows: «Celestial Mechanics» - about love and loneliness, and «Timeless» - a story based on the works of outstanding Russian playwrights will unfold before the spectators. In a cyclic mode, the works of the international competition Art Vision, created by the best teams from around the world, will be shown.

Daily, from 19:30 to 23:00, visitors of the Tsaritsyno Park will be able to enjoy an impressive audio-visual show «The Palace of Feelings» on the façade of the Grand Palace, live performance of Turetsky Soprano art-group with an amazing show of light and music, fountains show on Tsaritsyno pond and amazing light installations.

A unique pyrotechnical 30 minute performance from Japanese manufacturers will be presented to the audience on the 27th of September, at the end of the Moscow International Festival «Circle of Light». Hundreds of pyrotechnical shells with caliber up to 600 mm will be fired from four barges installed on Strogino pond.

Festival events will be held simultaneously in two covered areas. On September 24, at MIR Concert Hall the audience will have the opportunity to witness «ART VISION» contest, where teams from different countries will compete in light images and music battle. On September 23 and 24, free educational program, consisting of lectures, seminars and practical classes will be held at the Digital October Center.

On September 19th we recall People's Artist of the USSR Vera Nikolaevna Pashennaya (1887 - 1962).

The first reading of the tragicomic play «The Visit of the Old Lady» by Swiss dramatist Friedrich Dürrenmatt that will be staged at the Maly Theatre was held on September 5th. The production will be directed by Ilan Ronen (Israel). This will be his second staging in our theatre (the first being «Le Bourgeois gentilhomme»/ « The Bourgeois Gentleman» by Molière, 1990). By tradition, the production team was greeted by the Artistic Director of the theatre Yuri Mefodievich Solomin.

On September 16th we recall an incredible playwright, actor and director of the Maly Theatre Alexander Ivanovich Sumbatov-Yuzhin (1857 - 1927).
