It is with deep regret and sorrow that the Maly Theatre announces the death of the great Russian actress best known for the role in the film version of the Nobel Prize-winning novel And Quiet Flows the Don, People’s Artist of the USSR, Elina Avraamovna Bystritskaya. The staff of the Maly Theatre would like to offer her family and friends our deepest and most sincere condolences and may the soul of this amazing woman and a truly talented artist rest in peace.

Elina Bystritskaya has died at the age of 91 on April 26.

The farewell ceremony will be held on April 29. A civil memorial service will be held in the auditorium of the main stage of the Maly Theatre from 12 to 13 o'clock in the afternoon. She will be buried in Novodevichy Cemetery.

On April 20 People’s Artist of Russia Vasiliy Ivanovich Bochkaryov celebrates 40 years of acting on the stage of the Maly Theatre. We would like to thank Vasiliy Ivanovich for his fervent efforts, creativity and his big heart. Our heartiest and warmest congratulations on this special day.

Celebrated yearly on April 18th, the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day,attracts a lot of visitors to the historical sites. The Maly Theatre is a unique memorial of culture and architecture and one of the main buildings forming the architectural complex of Moscow Theatre Square.

From April 18 to May 31, Heritage Days are held in Moscow for the 19th time. This year over 400 events are planned.

Every year active Muscovites take part in the voting in the project called "Active Citizen." According to the results of the voting in 2019, the objects that became laureates of the Moscow Restoration 2018 competition were added as places to visit: the Maly Theatre and the Ensemble of the Podmoskovnaya locomotive depot. Today we have a unique chance to take a peek into our Children's Theatre Studio and see how our young artists are doing and what they have already learned. The classes are run by the actors of the Maly Theatre: Lyubov Eshchenko, Natalya Kalinina, Alexander Naumov and Konstantin Yudaev.

On April 15 we held an evening in memory of Akira Kurosawa, the prominent Japanese director who directed Dersu Uzala, an award-winning film starring Yuri Solomin, who played one of the leading roles.

The evening was held in the New Shchepkinskoe foyer of the Maly Theatre. An exhibition dedicated to Dersu Uzala was opened in the foyer of the theatre. One of its main exhibits was the sculptural group, made by Aleksey Chebanenko, the busts of Yuri Solomin, Maksim Munzuk and Akira Kurosawa himself.

P.S. On April 30 Dersu a special screening of Dersu Uzala will be held in the Engineering Building of the Tretyakov Gallery. In fact, this is a unique chance to see Akira Kurosawa's film on the big screen.Admission is free. Beginning at 19:00.

“I wanted to give you a very special contract. Honestly, over the past few years, it is the first time that I sign a contract of that kind. This is a termless contract to manage the Maly Theatre, ”said Vladimir Medinsky.

The Minister of Culture stressed that the Maly Theatre is one of the leading theatre in the country in terms of occupancy, and is also one of the most efficient theatres in making its own extra-budgetary funds.

“Thank you so much for all the work that you've done, you steered the theatre like a ship through the storm for over 30 years, guarded and defended it from all the troubles, and organized a wonderful reconstruction of a historical building. Yuri Solomin - Russian actor and director. Born on June 18, 1935 in Chita. He graduated from the the Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theatre School, the course of Vera Pashennaya. Since 1957 he has been the actor of the Maly Theatre, since 1961, teaches courses at the Shchepkin Theatre School. He staged the following performances in the Maly Theatre - The Government Inspector (1982), The Seagull (1996), The Mysterious Chest (2003) and others. Since 1988 Yuri Solomin has been the artistic director of the Maly Theatre.

He acted in films: Adjutant of His Excellency, Blockade, Dersu Uzala, Going Alone, Ordinary Miracle, Melodies of the White Night, TASS Authorized to State, and others. In 1988 he was awarded the title "People's Artist of the USSR".

As you may remember, we have recently opened a theatre studio for children. The first class took place on February 26.

The studio is headed by Alexandra Solomina.

The drama classes are run by the artists of the Maly Theatre: Irina Leonova, Lyubov Eshchenko, Nataliya Kalinina, Alexander Naumov and Konstantin Yudaev.

Konstantin Yudaev on working with children: "First of all, working in a theatre studio is a sort of a pressure test for me. Young children are a very specific audience. They can develop many skills through the power of play.Through play children can develop imagination, social and cognitive skills, etc. That is why we gradually turn all learning stages into a sort of a game - from speech training to dancing, otherwise it is almost impossible to keep their attention.

The goal of our classes is to cultivate love and respect of art and theatre, teach them how to be a team player, teach them to be disciplined, to see and hear each other, not to be afraid of the audience. And acting skills are just what they need. "

On April 2 the first reading of the play by Nikolai Gogol The Gamblers was held in the theatre. This comedy was staged in the Maly Theatre for the very first time on February 5, 1843, and the legendary actor of the Maly Mikhail Shchepkin played the leading role. 56 years later, in 1899 The Gamblers were staged by Alexander Lensky and since then the MalyTheatre has not the play on stage.

The current production of The Gamblers is timed to coincide with the celebration of the 210th anniversary since the birth of the Russian writer. The director is Vladimir Dragunov.

The Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre Yuri Solomin traditionally attended the first reading of the play and wished the production team best of luck. Vladimir Dragunov and designer Stanislav Benediktov shared their vision of the production.

Starring: Igor Petrenko, Gleb Podgorodinsky, Vasiliy Zotov, Mikhail Fomenko, Valeriy Afanasyev, Maksim Filatov, Aleksey Dubrovskiy, Stanislav Soshnikov, Alexander Naumov and Natalia Kalinina.

On April 2 Stanislav Soshnikov appeared on the stage in the role of Stepan in Nikolai Gogol's comedy The Marriage. Congratulations to Stanislav!

On March 31 after the Cinderella morning show an exhibition called "I AM A THEATRE DESIGNER" will be opened in the foyer of the Maly Theatre on Bolshaya Ordynka street. The exhibition is timed to coincide with the World Theatre Day.

The exhibitions will include drawings selected according to the results of the competition, which the Maly Theatre held during the New Year holidays. According to the terms of the competition, young spectators had to become theatre designers for a while — design a sketch for their favorite fairy tale, and then hand in their work during the visit to one of the Maly's New Year's performances.

There were a lot of works and the best ones were included in the exhibition, and all viewers who will come to the performances of the Maly Theatre on Ordynka before the end of the season will be able to see them.
