In 2000 Irina graduated from Mikhail Semyonovich Shchepkin Higher Theatre School and joined the Maly Theatre’s company, where she played while being a student. She quickly became one of the theatre's leading actresses.
In 2002 Irina became a laureate of the Young Talent Festival «Moscow Debuts» in the nomination «Best Actress» for her performance in «Woe from Wit». A year later, she was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and art for the role of Poliksena in «Truth is good, but happiness is better».
Irina started her film career in 2001. She played small roles in Vasily Panin's drama «We must live again», Vsevolod Shilovsky's TV series «People and Shadows», Karen Shakhnazarov's tragicomedy «Poisons, or the World History of Poisoning». Her first big break came after she landed the role of Christina in «The Best City on Earth» TV show that premiered in 2003. In the same year Irina Leonova played the main character (Alice) in Evgeny Lavrentiev’s comedy «Shnek, or Dream on!» and the role of Galka in «New Year Adventures», and a year later - Lena in the popular TV series «The Children of Arbat».
