Maksim was born on June 28, 1986. In 2007 he graduated from Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theatre School (course of O.N. Solomina and Y.M. Solomin, among his teachers were V.I. Bochkaryov, A.S. Potapov, V.N.Dragunov, V.E.Fyodorov) and joined the Maly Theatre’s company.
Starting with bit parts in «The Power of Darkness» by Leo Tolstoy, «Dmitry the Pretender and Vasily Shuysky» by Alexander Ostrovsky, «The Children of the Sun» by Maxim Gorky, «There Was Not a Single Penny, and Suddenly There is a Dime» by Alexander Ostrovsky, in 2009 Maxim Khrustalyov played his first significant role – Jean-Jacques Bouton in Vladimir Dragunov’s production of «The Life and Love of Monsieur de Molière, or The Cabal of Hypocrites» by Mikhail Bulgakov. He portrayed a modest a candle-taker and Molière's servant, who also serves as a lightning rod – Molière often works off his fears and frustration on him. Bouton is always wary of everything, he is naggy and always wrangles with his landlord, the same time he is very devoted to him. Maksim managed to create a tragicomic image of a servant and confidant, a low ranker, who evoking both laughter and sympathy from the audience.
During his years of work in the Maly Theatre, Maksim produced a rich palette of characters. In 2013, Maksim was cast as Vassiliy Danilitch Vozhevatov in Ostrovsky’s comedy «Without a Dowry». Larisa's childhood friend, he is cold and tough-minded, and most cynical in her entourage. He is not as romantic as Paratov, nor as ardent as Knurov. Khrustalyov embodied the character that that exists outside of our space-time. He is a typical businessman in the worst sense of the word. Maksim managed to bring a certain charisma to his role thus making Vozhevatov a truly dreadful hero willing to wade through slaughter.
