In March a branch of the State Academic Maly Theatre was officially opened in Kogalym. This rather extraordinary event became the subject of our talk with the managing director of the theatre Tamara Mikhaylova at the end of the theatre season.

- Tamara Anatolyevna, in the spring the Maly Theatre opened a branch in Kogalym. Is it possible to draw preliminary results already?

- In March, at the grand opening, we showed Alexander Ostrovsky's comedy Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man featuring our star actors. In April, they played the first series of performances for children The Snow Queen and The Minor.

- So how will the branch operate?

- Initially, we planned to create a permanent company there, but now we have come to a conclusion that it will not be very honest with the citizens of Kogalym, because they are waiting for our artists. Therefore, we have decided to go there on a rotating scheme. All the artists, who work on our stages in Moscow, both our stars and the young artists, will travel to Kogalym. Maintaining the high level of the Maly Theatre is crucial to us.

- One Telegram channel quotes you, saying: “I do not know how we are going to operate that far way. This is such an unprofitable enterprise. " Is this your quote?

- No, this quote should not be trusted. These are not my words, but someone clearly wants to put these words in my mouth. How can I be called a managing director if I don’t know how our other stages will work? We know how it will work, we know what repertoire will be there. And one more important point, the artistic director of the Maly Theatre Yuri Solomin himself comes from Chita, and he pays special attention to the remote regions of our country and believes that the theatre should be accessible to everyone who was not born and does not live in Moscow. We are a state theatre and should work equally well both in Moscow and in any other city, which, in fact, we do. We never go on tours with concert versions of our performances. We play our performances exactly the same way we play them in Moscow – same actors, same set, same costumes. And we are proud of it.

- When are you opening a new theatre season in Kogalym?

- Our opening coincides with the City Day! And this was not part of our plans. The idea came up to our young actors during their first performances in March and April. They have prepared a special program for the City Day and will go there to take part in the festivities. And we are playing the first performances at the end of September.

- What kind of events, besides performances, are you planning to put on on the stage of the new branch?

- The plans include meetings with the artists, master classes, maybe even excursions. I know that Yuri Mefodievich Solomin wants to go to Kogalym with a creative program. In addition, we are now actively developing children's programs. In April, our young artists held master classes, attended the Spring Theatre festival, and met with the young actors. And I really hope that we continue to strengthen this partnership and cooperation.

- You managed to show your first performances not only in Kogalym, but also in Surgut. Are you planning to send productions on tour to other cities of Ugra?

- In fact, I believe that it is our responsibility to show performances in the entire Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area, because initially this branch was conceived as a base for sending touring productions all across Western Siberia. We are currently discussing tours in Nizhnevartovsk and Khanty-Mansiysk.

- Are dates and names already known?

- There are several performances that are already confirmed. Firstly, The Snow Queen remains on a permanent basis in Kogalym, and we will show it in other cities as well, since we believe that this magical children's fairy tale is a good way to begin acquaintance of our future audience with the theatre. We’ll bring Wolves and Sheep and Money To Burn by Alexander Ostrovsky. But we are not planning to repeat the same performances - we will try to bring new ones regularly.

- Tamara Anatolyevna, recently Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky visited the Maly Theatre in Kogalym. Is he satisfied with what he saw?

- I did not hear anything from him personally, but I saw an interview where Vladimir Rostislavovich gave the highest ratings to our building and its technical equipment, - he believes that this is a very good enterprise.

- During this visit, he presented the President of LUKOIL Vagit Alekperov with the badge of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation 'For Contribution to Russian Culture'.

- The theatre was built on the initiative of Vagit Alekperov, all work was funded by LUKOIL. At a certain stage, he even went to the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, with a proposal to open a branch of the Maly Theatre, realizing that the academic theatre will open up new opportunities to people living outside our capitals. It is a completely different level of culture and the Maly Theatre represents the school that has been created centuries ago. It would be great if his initiative could be supported by our other leading businessmen, who could promote real art in the regions that are quite far from the cultural centers of the country.

On June 14 People’s Artist of Russia Viktor Andreevich Bortsov would have turned 85 years old. Unfortunately, this remarkable artist and cheerful person has not been with us for the past 11 years, but his colleagues and friends keep his memory alive. The Maly Theatre has recently published a book written by G.M. Poltavskaya and N.I. Pashkina entitled Viktor Andreevich, Step Forward.

A few years ago, Viktor Bortsov's wife Stella Sergeevna handed over the family archives to the Maly Theatre. Today we are sharing with you a tiny part of this priceless gift. We deliberately refused to publish photos in the roles, giving place to cadres who captured Viktor Bortsov in life, on stage, in a circle of colleagues.

Russia's Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky arrived in Kogalym for an official visit. The main interest is a branch of the Maly Theatre that was opened in Ugra in March 2019. The project was supported by LUKOIL as part of the Agreement on Cooperation between LUKOIL, the Russian Federation Ministry of Culture, the Maly Theatre, the Government of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District – Yugra and the local administration of the city of Kogalym.

The visit began early this morning at the Maly Theatre. This is the first branch of the famous Russian drama theatre in the Russian regions. The project is unique. The Minister had a tour of the theatre's museum and saw a permanent exhibition that includes historical photographs, props, costumes. And, by the way, the most interesting exhibit - the pen that signed the construction agreement. The construction works lasted 2 years.

Today, Vladimir Medinsky presented the Ministry awards to those, who participated and contributed to the construction. Vagit Alekperov received an honorary badge for his contribution to the culture. Natalia Komarova received a letter of appreciation from the Ministry of Culture.

Vladimir Medinsky, Minister of Culture of Russia: «The creation of a branch of an academic, formerly imperial theatre is a unique event. Until the last moment I did not believe that it would work out in Kogalym. But it worked. Kogalym is a small city, but very important for our country. We hope that this will become a theatrical and cultural center of the whole area.»

Natalia Komarova, Ugra Governor: «It is important to form a theatre company here, we are ready to provide opportunities for the young actors, for their professional growth. Despite the fact that the theatre has not yet entered a permanent mode of operation. We have at least three stages of a decent level: in Kogalym, in Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk, where one could perform shows of any world-class theatre.»

For Vladimir Medinsky, this is the first visit to Kogalym. During the stay if Kogalym the delegation visited the museum, the aquarium ... The impressions were the most favorable. Well, now we will wait for the performances of the Maly Theatre in Kogalym and other Ugra cities.»

The 220th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Pushkin is just another good reason to remember the great writer and his works. On June 9, the artists of the Maly Theatre were invited to perform in the Ivanovskoye estate in Podolsk.

In the year of the 220th anniversary of the Alexander Pushkin birth, the museum decided to hold an exhibition dedicated to Nadya Rusheva. Nadya Rusheva was a Soviet graphic artist, author of an amazing series of works - “Pushkiniana” - illustrations for Pushkin's works. What can be seen at the exhibition in Podolsk is taken from the exposition of the Nadya Rusheva school memorial museum (at the Moscow school number 1466, which bears her name).

Actors of the Maly Theatre, Stanislav Soshnikov and Lyubov Eshchenko, were invited to speak at the opening of the exhibition.Both actors play in the theatre's productions based on Pushkin's works. Stanislav plays in The Tale of Tsar Saltan and in Count Nulin along with Alexander Naumov and Karina Sakhanenko in the A.I.Sumbatov-Yuzhin's Memorial Apartment, and Lyubov plays the role of Liza in The Queen of Spades.

The program of the actors' performances on June 9 included: the poems The Prophet and The Portrait, excerpts from the poems The Bronze Horseman, Count Nulin, the novel The Queen of Spades.

Stanislav Soshnikov, before reading Nulin, noted that it «is particularly unusual to read a poem in the interiors of the Ivanovskoye estate, because the events described in it also take place a nobleman’s estate, but, of course, not as big as this one».

The opening of the exhibition was held in the fireplace room. The estate "Ivanovo" is famous for its owner of the late 18th - early 19th century - the beautiful Agrafena Feodorovna Zakrevskaya, to whom Vyazemsky, Baratynsky and, of course, Alexander Sergeevich devoted verses. Pushkin wrote about her in the poem The Portrait:

And, passing by all world’s conditions,

In 2017 the Memorial apartment of A.I. Sumbatov-Yuzhin prepared an exhibition dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the great actor and director of the Maly Theatre, Alexander Pavlovich Lenskiy (1847-1908).

OnJune 11 (Tuesday) 2019 at 19:00 in the Memorial apartment of A.I. Sumbatov-Uzhin thematic evening called “Alexander Lenskiy, Alexander Yuzhin and the public: On the issue of applause, benefit performances and anniversaries. "

Alexander Lenskiy was the first to speak out against benefit performances and offerings from the public (flowers, valuable gifts, etc) during the perfomance. Lenskiy argued that “the actor is not the audience’s butler”, and refused his benefit performance for the 25th anniversary of his service in the Maly Theatre.

In December 1895, Alexander Pavlovich Lenskiy published a letter in the Moscow newspaper "News of the Day" about "the destruction of the applause." How did the actors and the audience react to this? People's Artist of Russia Vasiliy Bochkaryov, and actors Konstantin Yudaev and Aleksey Dubrovskiy took part in the unveiling ceremony of the monument to Alexander Pushkin in Sheremetyevo International Airport. They performed a fragment from The Blizzard.

On June 6 the A. A. Bakhrushin state Central Theatre Museum held a ceremony of landing the Tree of the Russian Theatre timed to coincide with the 220th anniversary of Pushkin. On this day, the museum opened the historical entrance from the Garden Ring.

An eight-meter tree appeared on the territory of the future museum-theatre quarter “Bakhrushinsky”. Th artistic directors and actors of the leading theatres of Russia - Moscow Art Theatre, the Maly Theatre, the Russian Academic Youth Theatre (RAMT), the Et Cetera Theatre, and the Romen Gypsy Theatre took part in the ceremony.

The representatives from the Maly Theatre included actors: Dariya Shevchuk, Maksim Filatov, Alexander Naumov and Stanislav Soshnikov. They performed Alexander Pushkin's poems The Prophet (Stanislav Soshnikov), To Chaadaev and Chaadaev (Maksim Filatov).
