On April 2 the first reading of the play by Nikolai Gogol The Gamblers was held in the theatre. This comedy was staged in the Maly Theatre for the very first time on February 5, 1843, and the legendary actor of the Maly Mikhail Shchepkin played the leading role. 56 years later, in 1899 The Gamblers were staged by Alexander Lensky and since then the MalyTheatre has not the play on stage.
The current production of The Gamblers is timed to coincide with the celebration of the 210th anniversary since the birth of the Russian writer. The director is Vladimir Dragunov.
The Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre Yuri Solomin traditionally attended the first reading of the play and wished the production team best of luck. Vladimir Dragunov and designer Stanislav Benediktov shared their vision of the production.
